In September 2006, Zakheni, funded by HopeHIV, ran FireMaker workshops with a group of Care Workers at PEPE (a preschool project) and Tanaka (a street child project) in Harare, Zimbabwe. The workshops met a real need expressed for more play skills to develop psychosocial support for extremely vulnerable children living in the unstable climate of Zimbabwe.
One participant fedback that she “discovered that there are many ways of helping children express themselves, through having fun rather than having one to one counseling behind closed doors”. The workshops challenged participants to think differently around children’s needs and move towards more child friendly support interventions. Zakheni has been invited back to run Consolidation Workshops at Oasis. HopeHIV will fund this later in the year.
