Date: Friday 20^th - Sunday 22^nd July 2012

Venue: Little Streams, Klein Constantia Road, Constantia, Cape Town

Time: 9.00am – 4:00 pm

Beyond Words is a three day workshop that equips social workers, clinical psychologists, registered counsellors and occupational therapists to use arts based methods and techniques in their work with children, adolescents, adults and older people.  These methods are drawn from internationally developed creative arts therapies disciplines.

The skills and experiences gained by participants can be adapted to and incorporated in many work spheres, both individual and group.

Participants will gain knowledge on how working with image, metaphor and play can facilitate psychological processes.  This method of working is particularly suited to clients who:

• struggle to articulate their difficulties through words
• are traumatised
• are prone to destructive acting out
• have difficulties in containing their intense emotions
• have social and behavioural difficulties
• present with somatic difficulties
• have reached an impasse within the therapeutic process
• have a psychiatric diagnosis which impedes their communication
• wish to explore the wholeness of their personality including their creativity

You will earn 18 CPD points for attendance.

During 2011, we had the pleasure of working with Bongani Goniwe as our intern in Project Management on The Zakheni Schools Dramatherapy Project. He was the Project Manager, Heather Mac's right hand man and helped us in many ways. Let's hear an englightening story about his journey with Zakheni as told in his own words:

“When I applied for the post at Zakheni Arts Therapy Foundation, I had my interest in Drama and with no knowledge of Drama Therapy. I knew if I get the post I will be exposed to new skills and knowledge. I had been exposed to Project Management and Events Management for quite some time as an employee of the City of Cape Town, Cape film Commission and Cape Technikon (CPUT). My experience made me have enough confidence to apply at Zakheni and I knew that I was going to make the difference within the Schools Project.

Through witnessing and experiencing the Firemaker Workshop Series I have seen how important it is for the development and sustainability of support groups for orphans and vulnerable children. The significance of FireMaker is that it focuses on the language of children, one of creativity and play. Through offering participants, social workers and care workers, the space to access their own creativity and equipping them with arts-based tools, they are empowered to take this way of working into their support groups.
